Officine Panerai Luminor PAM 00270. Two weeks ago, we took a look at the Officine Panerai Luminor 1950 8 Days GMT PAM 00233. Panerai has a very similar offering to the PAM 233, which is the PAM 270. The two watches are so similar, we wonder why Panerai decided to create the PAM 270. Like the PAM 233, the PAM 270 is a dual time watch, the GMT hand being a 12 hour hand coupled with a day/night indicator rather than the usual 24 hour GMT hand.
Ten day power reserve automatic movement. Like the PAM 233, the PAM 270 has a movement with a long power reserve. In fact the PAM 270 has the longest power reserve in the Panerai line-up with its 10 day power reserve. The PAM 270 uses in-house Panerai Calibre 2003 movement. It is the only watch in the manifaturra line-up that use this movement. In fact it is the only self-winding watch in the manifaturra line-up.
A 10 day power reserve coupled with a self-winding movement seems like overkill. I guess it does have it uses. The combination of the 10 day power reserve plus the the action of the rotor should keep it running a long time, even if seldom used. Personally, with a a long 8-10 day power reserve, I would prefer a manual winding watch. However, there is nothing wrong with coupling a very long power reserve with a self-winding movement. It just seems a bit odd.
Anyway, enough about that. The Panerai Calibre 2003 movement has the date complication, a second hour hand, a day/night indicator and a power reserve indicator.
Twelve Hour GMT. Most GMT watches, including Panerai's own GMT watches, use 24 hour hand to display the second time zone. Being a 24 hour hand, it will also tell you whether it is AM or PM on the second time zone. In the PAM 270, as well as the other GMT watches in the Panerai manifattura line-up, the second hour hand, or GMT hand, rotates once every 12 hours, rather than 24. A day/night indicator displays whether it is AM or PM in the second time zone.
The AM/PM or day/night indicator is the other aspect where the PAM 270 is different from the PAM 233.
PAM 233 v. PAM 270. Other than the movement, and the day/night indicator, the PAM 233 and PAM 270 are virtually identical. Both being the typical 44 mm diameter Panerai Luminor case built in stainless steel. Both having a polished bezel on a brushed. case. Water resistance rating of both watches is 100 meters. Be default, the do have different straps, the PAM 233 coming with a more contemporary black leather strap, and the PAM 270 with a more traditional brown crocodile strap.
