IWC Father & Son Pilots Watches

Father and Son. IWC sells two of its popular pilots watches as a father and son set. To buy the IWC Father Pilots Watch you have to buy at least one IWC Son's Pilots Watch. Since a father may have more than one son, IWC allows for the purchase of more than one IWC Son's Pilots Watches with every purchase of of IWC Father's Pilots Watches. IWC Father and Son watches have a space on the case back reserve for engraving the name of the owner.

Fathers Watch. The IWC Father's Pilots Watch is actually a IWC Big Pilots Watch built in platinum. Being built with platinum, this watch is fairly expensive with a manufacturers suggested retail price of US$44,500. It is a large watch with a 46.2 mm case diameter. The dial of the watch is fairly simple displaying only time and date with a power reserve indicator. The power reserve indicator is one of the more interesting features of this watch.

Like the other pilot's watches in the IWC line-up, this watch features a soft
soft iron inner case for protection against magnetic fields. The case is water resistant to 60 meters.

The IWC Father's Pilots Watch is powered by the Calibre 51111 movement. This self-winding movement produces 21,600 vibrations per hour and has an 8.5 day power reserve, however the watch will only run for 7 days when fully wound. A mechanism stops the watch when it only has 1.5 days power left. This is because, according to IWC "the torque that drives the movement decreases as the mainspring winds down, leading to a loss of amplitude in the balance and the unacceptable possibility of inaccuracy."

The Calibre 51111 movement also features the Pellaton Winding System, which was created by than IWC Technical Director, Albert Pellaton in the 1940's. Unlike the design of other watches, the movement of the rotor is not transmitted to a wheel train via a gear system but through a cam. This supposedly makes the rotor wheel more durable.

Son's Watch. The IWC Son's Pilot Watch is actually a modified IWC Mark XVI. The case has a diameter of 39 mm. The case is built with stainless steel, which helps keep the price of this watch down to US$4,500.

The IWC Son's Pilot Watch is powered by IWC's 30110 movement, which has only the basic date complication. This self-winding movement produces 28,800 vibrations per hour and has a 42 hour power reserve. The movement is encased in a soft soft iron inner case for protection against magnetic fields. The case is also water resistant to 60 meters.

About IWC. IWC or the the "International Watch Co. Schaffhausen" was founded by an American engineer from Boston, Florentine Ariosto Jones, in Schaffhausen, Switzerland in the year 1868. IWC Schaffhausen is notable for being the only major Swiss watch factory located in eastern Switzerland, as the majority of the well-known Swiss watch manufacturers are located in western Switzerland.
