Baselworld 2010: Patek Philippe Nautilus Annual Calendar Ref. 5726A

Calendar watches. Patek Philippe released quite a few calendar watches at Basel world 2010. At Basel 2010, the annual calendar finally made its way to the Nautilus line of watches. When we say finally, we do not mean we expected it. The Nautilus being a sports line of watches, we did not really expect to see a this type of complication in the Nautilus line-up. But for those who want a annual calendar in Nautilus trim, you now have one.

Nautilus Annual Calendar Ref. 5726A. The Ref. 5726A is rather similar to the Calatrava based annual calendar, the Ref. 5396, both watches being powered by the is powered by the self-winding 324 S QA LU 24 H movement. This movement has a day and month display in two apertures just under the 12 0' clock position. A third aperture in the 6 o'clock displays the date. On top of the date display is a moon phase and day-night indicator. The movement produces the expected 28,800 vibration per hour and has a 45 hour power reserve.

The Ref. 5726A has a 40.5 mm diameter stainless steel case with a water resistance rating of 120 meters. The case is mated with a matte black alligator skin strap, with the matter finish fitting the sporting nature of this watch nicely.

What is an annual calendar? Many watches display the date, month and date on their dial. But since some months have only thirty, twenty-nine of twenty-eight days, you need to adjust the date at least five time per year. A annual calendar is a mechanism that automatically takes into account the varying number of days in each month so that the watch displays the correct date each month without the need of adjustment. A annual calendar watch will only need correction on March 1 every year.
