Manufacture d'horlogerie. Manufacture d'horlogerie is a term reserved for watch manufacturers that make all or most of the parts required for their movements in their own production facilities as opposed to assembling watches using parts purchased from other firms. For reasons of their in-house expertize companies classified as manufacture d'horlogerie are generally considered to be the elite of the watch making industry.
Worlds largest watch manufacturer. Citizen Watch Co. is a Japanese watch company. It was originally founded as Shokosha Watch Research Institute in 1918. The name originated from a pocket watch sold under the CITIZEN name in 1924. In 1930, the company took on its current name, Citizen Watch Comapny. In 2007, the name was changed to Citizen Holdings Co. Ltd. and a new subsidiary was established which took on the old name Citizen Watch Company. In 1986 Citizen assumed the No. 1 position in world watch production, a position it retains until today.

Eco-Drive. Citizen all but abandoned automatic watch development, in favor of developing quartz watches,. Today Citizen is best know for its Eco-Drive watches which it started selling in 1995. Eco-Drive movements, are quartz movements which have rechargeable batteries which are powered by light. The battery in a Eco-Drive watch is designed to last for more than 20 years, and the lubrication applied to the mechanical parts of the watch does not harden even after 20 years.
Miyota. As far as mechanical watches are concerned, Citizen still builds mechanical movements through it subsidiary the Citizen Miyota Company, although these are found in lower end citizen watches and are used by many other companies in their watches.
