The case for the Rolex Submariner 14060M

Modern Classic. The Rolex Submariner 14060M, more fondly known as the no-date Submariner, disappeared from Rolex's website 2-3 years ago, giving rise to speculation that the watch would be discontinued. The Rolex 14060M was on display as Baselworld 2010, so it is safe to say it will be around till next year. The Rolex Submariner 14060M is the most classic Rolex in production, and we think this is a very good reason to buy one.

It is the last Rolex watch to be built which has lug holes. Until the early 2000's this was nothing special, but one by one this characteristic has disappeared from Rolex watches. The lug holes makes it easier to remove the bracelet, without the need of the proper tool. Some maintain that the lug hole versions are more durable since they have spring-bars with a larger diameter which extend deeper into the lugs the new spring-bars on the no lug holes version. Both set-ups have proven to be durable, so overall, there really is no advantage or disadvantage to having lug holes. It's Rolex old way of doing things, giving the 14060M a classic appeal.

It is also the last Rolex to use the non-SEL (Solid End Link) bracelet. If your wrist are small (less than 7") you may find that this watch fits your wrist better than other "40mm" Rolex sports watches. The old style bracelet, makes that watch effectively 2-3mm shorter from end to end.

Finally, it is a true divers tool watch. Back in the day when wearing a sports watch was not fashionable, tool watches were worn only when performing a particular task. Since a diver would only wear a divers watch while actually diving, a date display was considered unnecessary. For the first twelve years of the manufacture of Rolex Submariners, no version had the date complication.

So that is the case of for the Rolex Submariner 14060M, a classic Rolex available BNIB.

Now if only Rolex would continue this watch with a matte dial, and with no white gold outlines on the hour markers...
