BaselWorld 2011: Pepsi, Coke and Jubilee

The remains some unfinished business with some of the recently released Rolex watches released. The new stainless steel with the ceramic bezel GMT Master II released in 2008 is a very popular and well received watch. What is missed by many is the absence of  the Pepsi bezel, with its two-toned blue and red color combination, and the Coke bezel, with its red and black color combination. Rolex has been able to produce its new ceramic bezel insert in black, blue and green, so color does not appear to be issue. The word is that putting two colors in a one piece ceramic bezel is something that has not been achieved yet. When and if we see a Pepsi and Coke GMT Master II again, would appear to be more a technological issue than a matter of timing.

Similarly, into the second year of its release, we still do not have a jubilee bracelet for the 41mm Datejust. We thought that we would be seeing that last year. The jubilee bracelet is the weakest of all Rolex bracelet designs, especially in gold or bi-metal, and is known to exhibit a degree of stretching after several hard years of use. Some degree of re-engineering would be needed since the 41mm case is a fair amount larger and heavier than the 36mm case the jubilee bracelet was originally designed to carry.  

The Datejust with a jubilee bracelet is one of Rolex's most iconic designs. Releasing this bracelet would cause as much fanfare as a completely redesigned watch. We do expect to see this soon. Maybe 2011 will be the year.
