Basel 2009: Omega Speedmaster Professional 40th Anniversary Edition

Moon Watch. The Omega Speedmaster Professional was the watch NASA supplied each of the Apollo astronauts. The "NASA issue" watch was supplied with a Velcro strap in addition to the steel bracelet found in the regular version. The Velcro strap was used to fasten the watch to the bulky space suits. This watch was not manufactured for use specifically by NASA. It had been on sale since 1957 and was selected by NASA after testing several commercially available watches.

At 02:56 GMT of July 21 1969, this watch landed on the moon.

Pre-Basel 2009. Omega released info about its 40th Anniversary Moon Landing Watch as early as January of this year. It does not stop it from being the most interesting Omega watch released at Baselworld 2009 in our opinion. Few watches have as rich as history as the Omega Speedmaster Professional, and if you only have one Omega Watch in your collection (sorry James Bond) this is the one.

The Omega Speedmaster Professional 40th Anniversary Moon Landing Watch is functionally identical to the Omega Speedmaster Professional 3570.50.00 which has been manufactured by Omega for several decades now. Both watches are powered by the same manual-wind Omega 1861 movement which produces 21,600 semi-oscillations per hour (3 Hz).

Both watches dials are protected by Hesalite shatter-proof acrylic crystal found on the original Moon Watch. Both watches are functionally identical chronographs. From a few feet, both watches look identical.

But Omega Speedmaster Professional 40th Anniversary Moon Landing Watch is a limited edition watch with a few more bells and whistles (which we normally are not to fond of, but this time, we have to take our hats off... very tastefully done Omega).

Below the words “OMEGA Speedmaster PROFESSIONAL” on the dial, the legend 02:56 GMT – the exact time that Neil Armstrong made his “one small step” onto the moon – is displayed in red. A small, distinctive OMEGA logo has been etched evocatively inside the Hesalite crystal.

The Apollo 11 “Eagle” mission patch is stamped on the caseback along with the words, “THE FIRST WATCH WORN ON THE MOON”, the limited edition number (0000/7969), and “July 21, 1969”, the date Armstrong and Aldrin first stepped onto the moon’s surface at 02:56, the time which is printed on the dial.

The OMEGA Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch Apollo 11 “40th Anniversary” Limited Edition is delivered in a black presentation box which also includes a 42 mm silver medal (the same diameter as the watch) featuring an engraving of the mission patch on one side with the words “APOLLO 11, 40th ANNIVERSARY”. On the reverse side, the medal is engraved, “THE EAGLE HAS LANDED”; “LAUNCHED JULY 16 1969”; “LANDED JULY 20, 1969”; and “RETURNED, JULY 24, 1969” along with OMEGA’s name and logo. Also in the presentation box is a certificate of authenticity and an envelope containing a black polishing cloth with information commemorating the historic space flight.

There are only 7969 of these watches. That is something to think about.

About Omega SA. The forerunner of Omega was founded 1848, by Louis Brandt. The name Omega was first used in 1894. It was used as the name of one of the Louis Brandt brother’s watch movement calibers.
