New 39mm Rolex Explorer I Ref. 214270 Pricing

Because its there. The new Rolex Explorer I has finally hit the market. It's US$5,750 suggested retail price will raise some eyebrows. If you want one of the first to hit the market, you will probably have to pay a small US$400-US$500 premium. It's really the same watch as the older Explorer I, with a 3mm larger case and a US$1,000 increase in price.

There really is not very much special about an Explorer I. The more functional Rolex Explorer II which features a date and a second time zone can be had for a few hundred dollars less and the same can be said for the classic no-date Submariner. So what does the new Rolex Explorer I have going for it?

A sense of history and tradition. It brings back memories of like George Mallory, Edmund Hilary, Tenzing Norgay and other
explorers who sought to conquer the last frontiers of the planet called earth and in doing so tested the limits of human endurance.

In the end, the new Rolex Explorer I, like its predecessor is a simple, unassuming, even unspectacular watch. But with the name Rolex and the word Explorer on the dial, it conveys a understated sense of elegance and purpose.
