Rolex Datejust II Ref. 116300. Except for the new Rolex Sky-Dweller, the other watches Rolex announced by Rolex at BaselWorld 2012 are just updated versions or modified versions of existing designs. Of the watches announced at BaselWorld 2012, my favorite is the new Ref. 116300, Datejust II.
Since the Datejust II was released in 2009, the only bezel option for the watch has been the fluted bezel. While the fluted bezel is beautiful and clearly identifies that watch as a Rolex, I always felt is was better when paired with a Jubillee bracelet. To date, the 41 mm Datejust II's are only offered with Oyster bracelets, and I think the smooth polished bezel is a better match to the Oyster Bracelet. It also gives the watch a sportier more rugged look to it.
The smooth bezel will also bring the price down by about US$1,000, because unlike the fluted bezel which is made of gold, the smooth bezel is constructed from stainless steel.
While only one configuration for the new Ref. 116300 was shown at BaselWorld 2012, it is a beautiful elegant yet no non-sense design. The simply stick markers painted with luminescent material should provide excellent legibility in the day and at night. The silver sunburst dial provide a subdued elegance befitting a working mans luxury watch.
Sometimes small changes do make a big difference, and I think the Rolex Datejust II Ref. 116300 is one example of that.
