Daylight. While Sylvester Stallone wears a Panerai in the 1996 disaster movie Daylight, Panerai's use of the name daylight initially referred to Panerai watches with a white dial. Today the name is used in conjunction with Panerai's Luminor based tradition chronograph watches.
The traditional chronograph design, consist of a watch with a stop watch function. The stop watch function uses the main second hand to measure seconds and one or two sub-dials to measure minutes or hours. These watches feature two buttons, one to start and stop the stopwatch function, and the other one to reset the main second hand and sub-dials all back to zero.
Today, we have more complicated chronographs, like the single button flyback or splits seconds chronographs, but must chronograph still follow the traditional design.
Officine Panerai Luminor Chrono Daylight 44mm PAM 00250 and PAM 00251. The Panerai Luminor Chrono Daylight is a traditional chronograph watch. The stop watch function makes use of the main second hand and the sub dials at the 3 o'clock and 6 o'clock to measure intervals of time of 30 minutes and 12 hours. The sub dial at the 9 o'clock keeps track of continues seconds. The two buttons on the watch are the traditional start/stop and reset button. The watch displays the date at the between the 4 to 5 o'clock positions.
The watch is powered by the Panerai OP XII movement, which is based on the Valjoux 7753 movement. This movement produces a smooth 28,800 vibrations per hour and has a 46 hours power reserve. Panerai has these movements certified by the COSC for accuracy.
The case of the watch has a 44 mm case diameter and has a 100 meter water resistance rating. A tachymeter for measuring speed is engraved on the bezel, reminiscent to the bezel of the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona.
The PAM 251 has a ivory dial on a stainless steel case while the PAM 250 has a black dial. Other than the color of dial, the two similar looking watches are distinguished by the hour makers. The PAM 251 uses a combination of Arabic and circular markers. The Panerai PAM 250 uses a combination of Arabic and stick markers.
