AVI-8 AV-4011 Hawker Hurricane

I found a fairly interesting watch from a small UK based company called AVI-8. Given the staggering number of watches offered by the company, manufacture is outsourced to a third party. Most likely a China based one. Still, Being a fan of Pilots watches and aviation history, I could not help but notice the AV-4011 when is popped on for sale on a local online store.

There is nothing spectacular about the watch itself. The watch has a 42 mm case which houses a Japanese quartz chronograph movement. Priced at about US$200, it is not necessarily a bargain. Still I found the old RAF roundel at the 9 o'clock particularly interesting. The watch comes in several color of dials and black and brown options for straps. But personally cream and brown (AV-4011-04) seems like the most attractive combination.

Still, if you are interested in aviation history, a watch commemorating the Hawker Hurricane might be a worthwhile addition to your collection.

Rolex Sky-Dweller Pricing

The Rolex Sky-Dweller which was announced at BaselWorld 2012 should now be showing up at you local Rolex Authorized Dealer. The Sky-Dweller is a dual time watch with an annual calendar mechanism, making the movement on this watch the most complicated movement in the current Rolex line-up.  

The Rose Gold version of the Sky-Dweller with a leather strap will set you back US$39,550. The yellow gold version, with a matching gold bracelet, will set you back US$46,150. The white gold version, with a  matching gold bracelet, will set you back US$48,850.

IWC Mark XVII - Still a Value for Money Offering

The IWC Mark XVI Pilots Watch has long been one of our favorites in terms of affordable but exclusive Swiss watches. With a retail price of US$3,500 (for the version with the leather strap) and available in the market for just under US$3,000 made it a surprisingly good deal. Together with the IWC Portifino, the IWC Mark XVI, had a price of which is strikingly low compared to the rest IWC branded siblings.

Fortunately, the new IWC Mark XVII Pilots Watch will not fall too far from the tree. The new model is retailing at US$4,750 to US$4,900, with a leather strap. But it is easy enough to negotiate a price of just below US$4,000. Getting the version with a steel bracelet will set you back another US$1,200 or so.

Rolex Datejust II Ref. 116300

The new for 2012, Rolex Datejust II Ref. 116300, should now be available at your local authorized dealer. The new Ref. 116300 brings the polished smooth bezel to the 41 mm Rolex Datejust II. The smooth bezel being made from stainless steel, rather than the white gold or yellow gold used in the version with a fluted bezel makes it the most affordable Datejust II. With a suggested retail price of  US$7,150 is is significantly cheaper than the fluted bezel versions which start at US$9,100.

At the local retailer I found this watch being offered with seven different versions with a choice of a white, silver, blue or black dial with either index hour markers of Roman numerals. 

Rolex Submariner Ref. 114060 retail price

The new for 2012, Rolex Submariner Ref. 114060, affectionally called the No-Date Submariner, should be hitting you local authorized dealer in the next few weeks. The new Ref. 114060 migrates the watch to the new heftier Maxi case, with a "Maxi" dial (larger hands and markers), brings a new more premium clasps and comes with the now standard ceramic bezel.

The suggested retail price is US$7,500. That is a little over US$1,000 lower than its sibling with a date display, the Ref. 116610LN.  Since you can probably negotiated a small 4-5% discount on the Ref. 116610LN, the price difference between the two should be about US$700. If you wait a bit, you can probably save a few hundred dollars if you are willing to wait a few months. Still, being one of the first to get one is really cool.

The US$7,500 retail price puts the Ref. 114060 about US$1,200 higher than the list price for the older Rolex Submariner 146060M. You can still get a small discount on the 14060M, the price difference will be more like US$1,500. If you have been sitting on the fence, it might be a good time to pick up the Ref. 14060M. If it the last of the Rolex watches with the old style clasp, non-SEL bracelet, the aluminum bezel and lug holes. The last of the Rolex modern classics.

Despite tough economic times, the Swiss Watch industry is still healthy

The financial crisis which hit the United States and later Europe in the third quarter of 2008 continuous. At the same time the Swiss Franc has increased in value as against almost all major currencies. The result, higher Swiss watch prices.

Looking at recently released Rolex watches, the effects of the rise in the Swiss Franc and Rolex's own pricing policy can be seen.

From new Rolex watch released the past four years, beginning the year before the financial crisis, you have seen price increases of 9% to 19%. Even the new Rolex Submariner saw a 10% increase in the year that it is been on the market. The figures above are based on the manufacturers suggested retail price and do not take into account discounts. 

The increased prices are across the industry. Patek Philippe's Calatrava Ref. 5196G which carried a retail price of US$25,600 in May 2010, is now priced at US$27,600. IWC's Mark VXI (on a leather strap) which had a suggested retail price of US$3,200 in May 2010, went up to US$3,500 at the start of this year and is now apparently carries as suggested retail price of US$4,100 based on my visit to the local A.D. two days ago (I need to confirm this, being a rather large jump in price).

Instead of seeing watch prices drop because of lack of demand due to the the difficult economic times, you see the reverse. The reason is, there is no lack of demand. Despite the tough economic times, the Wall Street Journal reports that, year on year Swiss Luxury Watch exports increased by 24.1% from August 2009 to August 2010. The figures as of August 2011 shows a slowing but still healthy 14.5% increase in exports. The market is expected to soften next year, mainly because of slowing economic growth in the US, Europe and Asia, to a bit below 10%.

Rolex Daytona Ref. 116515 pricing

The new Rolex Daytona's with the Cerachrom monobloc bezel which Rolex displayed at BaselWorld 2011 are being delivered to your local Authorized Distributer as you read this. Rolex Explorer II Reference 216570 pricing

The Rolex Explorer II, announced at BaselWorld 2011, has a suggested retail price of US$7,750, for both the model with the white or black dials. This puts it at US$250, less than the basic Rolex Submariner Date. Not a bad deal considering the Explorer II is a dual time watch. 

Online re-seller, Swiss Luxury has them on pre-order at a decent US$8,995, which is not too big a premium for a newly released watch.

Rolex's policy of steady price increases

If you had bough a stainless steel Rolex Submariner Ref. 1680 back in 1973, it would have cost you all of US$385, based on Rolex suggested retail price. This would be the equivalent of US1,985 today. By 1988, a Submariner Date would cost you US$1,975, or the equivalent of US$3,751 today. By 2004, the Submariner Date would cost you US$4,250, or the equivalent of US$5,054 today. Today, the current incarnation of the stainless steel Rolex Submariner Date, is listed at US$8,000.

Since 2004, the price increases which used to be intermittently made every few years is now a yearly affair. Cost of entry into the Rolex world is made more difficult every year as it climbs higher and higher in in the luxury watch food chain. But for the owner of a Rolex watch, the value of what you purchased is maintained by the policy of steady price increased. I am not saying buying a Rolex is a good investment. But should you decide to dispose of your Rolex watch for a newer model, or out of necessity, you should pretty much manage to get in dollars what you paid for it a few years back. If you wait a decade of more, the resale value should catch us with inflation.

New model premium. The Submariner is one of Rolex's best sellers and the new model has been eagerly awaited. As with any new Rolex watch, if you want one of the first (few thousand) off the line, you will have to pay a premium. In the case of the Rolex Submariner 116610LN and 116610LV, we do not see the crazy initial pricing the some newly released Rolex watches commanded in recent years.

Mainly due rumors that the Rolex Milgauss 116400GV was a "limited edition" watch, for a time it sold for almost 300% of its suggested retail price. Even its white and black face siblings which were not touted as limited editions sold for over 30% of their suggested retail price.

The Rolex Sea-Dweller DEEPSEA, at initial relase sold for as high as 65% over its suggested retail price, but that was a one off in the gray market. Within two months from its release, it sold for 30% over its suggested retail price.

In the case of the new Submariner, it is only selling at a premium of 10% or less. In our opinion, this is mainly due to the poor prevailing economic conditions. This is both, a good and a bad thing, more bad in my opinion.

Given that you should never really expect more than a 10% discount for a stainless steel Submariner, the 10% price premium on the asking price to get the first few thousand units in the market is not all that bad.

The increase in price of the new 39mm Explorer is a tad more than 10%. The price increase of the two Submariners is at 20%. Given that the substantial improvements of the new Submariner has a ceramic bezel and a glidelock clasp, whereas the Explorer I has an improved clasp, but a substantially simpler and less expensive one than that on the new Submariner, and more metal being larger in size, the larger price increase for the Submariner is justified.

In the real world though, the price increase of the 39mm Explorer is bigger than it looks. The older Explorer I regularly sold at a 15%-18% below the suggested retail price. I would not expect a discount on the new Explorer for some time. So effectively, the new Explorer I will cost 25%-30% more than the old one, at least in the short term. It is also likely that the new Explorer I will never be discounted as heavily as the old Explorer I.

On the other hand, the price increase of the new Submariner is smaller than it looks. Being one of Rolex's best selling models, it never is sold with steep discounts, maybe 5%-7%. Given than I do not expect discounts of either of the new Submariners, for a long period of time, the effective price increase is about 25%.

Officine Panerai Luminor 1950 Marina 3 Days Automatic PAM 00359

Deja vu. Panerai formally launched at the 2010 Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie it new line-up of watches. One of this watches is the new Officine Panerai Luminor 1950 Marina 3 Days Automatic (PAM 00359)... I distinctly remember writing about this watch last year.

The reason that the new Luminor 1950 Marina 3 Days Automatic, with reference code PAM 359 seems very familiar is that is almost identical to the PAM 312 released in 2009. Both watches have the built-by-Panerai Panerai P. 9000 calibre self-winding movement with a longer than usual three day power reserve which produces 28,800 vibrations per hour. Both watches use a 44mm diameter case using the 1950 case design. Both have a divers watch rating of 300 meters water resistant.
The difference is in the dial. Instead on a combination of arabic numbers and baton markers found in the PAM 312, the PAM 359 dial is adorned by arabic numerals only. The other big difference is the price. The PAM 359 expected at a US$7,400 retail price.

Watch collectors, value a watch more when the movement inside is built by the same company that build a watch. Panerai used to charge a premium for watches with built by Panerai movements. With the release of the PAM 312 in 2009, followed by the PAM 359 in 2010, I think we are seeing a migration to a point in time when all Panerai's will have built-by-Panerai.

Rolex Datejust II Pricing

The much awaited Rolex Datejust II with its 41mm dial has finally hit the market. While we do not have the pricing of the entire line-up we do have the prices of some of the 41mm models, which we can compare with the price of their 36mm counterparts.

The 41mm Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust II (Ref. 116334wio) in stainless steel with 18K white gold fluted bezel, white dial, index hour markers, and stainless steel Oyster bracelet has a list price of US$7,525. The same watch in 36mm (Ref. 116234wso) has a list price of US$6,400.

The two-tone version of the 41mm Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust II with the flutted bezel and oyster bracelet (Ref. 116233), has a list price US$9,525. The 36mm version of the same watch has a list price of US$8,375.

Pretty much you can expect to pay US$1,125 to US$1,150 for a 41mm Rolex Datejust II, than its 36mm version.

Rolex Milgauss GV almost at MSRP

We have been following the pricing of the Rolex Milguass for the past six months, since June 2008. And by August 2008, we predicted it would be selling at the manufacturers suggested retail price by the end of the year.

The green glassed 11640GV is still selling at a almost 10% premium, but its white a black faced siblings are now selling at almost a a bit more than 15% below MSRP.

In the end, there is really little demand for an anti-magnetic watch and the absence of a date function probably makes those who like the physical appearance of the watch think twice.

Ironically enough, if poor demand results in the production of the watch ceasing, the original hype that the GV version of the watch would be produced for a limited period of time, might actually come true and prices may start to climb again.

Deapsea and Milguass Pricing

Some newly released Rolex watches command a premium price over their suggested retail price. The newly released Rolex Sea-Dweller DEEPSEA has hit the market last August 2008 with a manufacturers suggested retail price (MSRP) of US$8,975 commanded a price of US$15K. in the grey market. This did not last long, withing a month its price market price was just about US$2,000 over the list price at US$11,295.


Despite a price increase which saw the DEEPSEA's MSRP go up US$9,250, its market price dropped to US$10,205.

We also been following the price of the Rolex Milgauss 116400 GV for four months now . This watch, witch hit the market in September 2007 with a MSRP of US$6,575 commanded a US$18,000 price in the grey market and held at US$14-15K for almost a year.


Since the end of June, the market price of the Milgauss 116400 GV has been dropping every few weeks. One online retailer, Swiss Luxury, adjusted its price from US$13,700 price last June 25, 2008 to US$7,450 today. The retail price of the Milgauss 116400 GV had dropped by a total of US$6,250 in four months.

Rolex Sea-Dweller DEEPSEA pricing and size

The Rolex Sea-Dweller DEEPSEA has hit the market last month, with the expected US$8,975 retail price. On the grey market commanded a price of US$15K. This did not last long, and it is now available for just over US$11K. Online reseller Swiss Luxury list the watch at US$11,295. Within two months from its release, the DEEPSEA commands a lower premium than the Milgauss 116400 GV that was released a year ago.

The reason for the lower demand for the DEEPSEA is not too clear. Whether it is adundant supply or its release into a softer market due to the world wide financial crisis is not clear.

One thing for sure it this that is this watch does have a smaller market to cater too. The watch is huge. The watch has a 43mm case diameter, which is larger than the 40mm's ofits predecessor, the Rolex Sea-Dweller 4000. Adding even more to its girth is its tickness. The DEEPSEA is all of 18mm tall, which is much taller than the 14mm of the Sea-Dweller 4000 and the 13mm of the Rolex Submariner.

Rolex Milgauss 116400 GV: Prices keep falling

We have been following the price of the Rolex Milgauss 116400 GV for three months now by checking on online resellers Swiss Luxury's prices. Since our last report three weeks ago, Swiss Luxury, reduced the prices on the Milgauss 116400GV to US$9,250 and today made another price reduction to US8,295. The retail price of the Milgauss 116400GV reduction has been a total of US$5,405 from its US$13,700 price last June 25, 2008

How are the non-green glassed Milgauss' doing? The black and white faced Milgauss watches are now available at below their US$6,200 manufacturers suggested retail prices.

Rolex and Basel 2008: Bigger and deeper

Basel 2008 was a year when Rolex confirmed it was going to follow the trend of releasing bigger watches. It was also a year when Rolex decided to launch big ticket items.

The new larger 41mm Day-Date II figured prominently in Rolex line-up of new watches in Basel 2008. The flagship of the new Day-Date II is the platinum Ref 218206 Oyster Perpetual Day-Date II with a polished bezel and a Super President bracelet which has a manufacturers suggested retail price of US$51050. Adding 8 round and 2 baguette diamonds on the dial brings the price up to $53550.


The Ref 218235 Oyster Perpetual Day-Date II in 18k rose gold with a fluted bezel and a Super President bracelet has a MRSP of $30200. Adding 8 round and 2 baguette diamonds on the dial will set you back $32700. The 18k white gold model of the Day-Date II (Ref 218239) is priced the same as the rose gold model. Priced a bit lower is the 18k yellow gold Ref 218238 with a MSRP of $27650. Adding 8 round and 2 baguette diamonds on the dial $30150. All the gold models are only available with fluted bezels and this watch is not going to come out in anything less than 18k yellow gold. So even with some heavy discounts, expect to spend over 20K for a Day Date II.


Gold seems to be at the forefront of Rolex's line-up for Basel 2008, and it also released the Ref 116505 Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona in 18k rose gold, with an Oysterlock bracelet, adding rose gold as an option to its all gold Daytona line-up which was previosuly available in only yellow and white gold. There are two dial options available, black on rose gold and rose gold on black. Priced at $30700, it has the same MSRP as the white gold models released earlier.

The Submariner also had updated all gold 2008 models. The Ref 116618 Oyster Perpetual Submariner Date in 18k yellow gold and the new ceramic time-lapse bezel carries an MSRP of $2725. This models comes with two bezel and dial options: black or blue. The

18k white gold version (Ref 116619) will set you back $29850.

Two Oyster Perpetual Datejust "Special Edition" watches with a 34mm case diameter and a bezel set with 12 diamonds on a Oyster bracelet will set you back $25100 for the yellow gold model (Ref 81318) and $27450 for the white gold model (Ref 81318). A stainless steel version with a 18k white gold fluted bezel with 11 diamonds set on Roman dial (Ref 116034) is priced at very reasonable $7000. Well after all the the five figure watch prices we are posting, 7k is a breath of fresh air.

Even the all stainless steel Oyster Perpetual Sea-Dweller Deapsea (Ref 116660), is made for those with deeper pockets. The new 43mm Rolex Divers watch with a 3990 meter water resistance rating comes in a a farily hefty, $8975. This makes it the second most expensive watch on the Rolex line-up without diamonds and not constructed of precious metals.

The Oyster Perpetual Ref. 116000 now in a larger 36mm stainless steel case and a domed bezel with an oyster bracelet will set you back just $4400.

Basel 2008 is the year Rolex went bigger and deeper (into your pocket).

The Rolex Milgauss 116400GV price saga continues

We have been following the Rolex Milgauss 116400GV price sage for two months now by checking on online resellers Swiss Luxury's prices. The past week has been particularly interesting, with several of the members of The Rolex Forums, reporting as having been able to purchase, or having received calls from their Authorized Distributors, the hard to find green glass Milgauss.

Yesterday, Swiss Luxury, reduced the prices on the Milgauss 116400GV down another US$1,120, from US$11,095 to US$9,975. This is still more the US$3K more than the Milgauss 116400GV US$6,575 manufacturers suggested retail price. But it looks like it wont be long now before it is available at MSRP.

On June 25, 2008, the quoted price of Swiss Luxury was US$13,700, which brings the total price reduction at Swiss Luxury in the past two months to US$3750. Brand-New-In-The-Box green glassed Milgauss' can be easily found at eBay, going for US$8000-US$9,000.
